Skyping with Mrs Yollis and her Class!

We had a lot of fun in 4KM and 4KJ yesterday morning, because we skyped our blogging buddy, Mrs Yollis, and her fabulous 2/3 class!

Mrs Yollis lives in California, USA. There is a big time difference between California and Victoria. You can read about time zones here. When we started the call it was…

9.00am Wednesday in Leopold, Victoria

2.00pm Tuesday in Los Angeles, USA

Mrs Morris, Miss Jordan and their students have been connecting with Mrs Yollis and her classes since 2009. Last year Mrs Morris even visited the USA and got to meet Mrs Yollis in person!

The format of today’s Skype call was called “One Minute Hot Seat”. Five 4KM/4KJ students and five students from Mrs Yollis’ class prepared questions to interview a student from the other side of the world. The stopwatch was ticking as each pair had one minute to chat.

Here are some of the questions and answers from our Skype call.

Skyping With Sophie From The Block!

This week, 4KM and 4KJ were surprised and excited to learn that Miss Hannan, who is a student teacher in 4KJ at the moment, is related to someone special. Her sister is Sophie, from The Block!

The Block is a popular television show in Australia. It features four couples who have to renovate very old, rundown adjacent townhouses in Melbourne, Victoria. They have just ten weeks to complete a full house renovation! Sophie is on the show with her husband, Dale.

Dale and Sophie, from The Block.

They have a specific budget, they compete in challenges for extra prizes and there are strict building regulations they have to comply with.

Each week the couples have to renovate and decorate one room and there is a prize for the winning room. Once the houses are complete, they go to auction, live on television.

It is currently the fourth week of The Block on television, but the filming finished up earlier in the year. Check out Sophie and Dale’s house so far!

Sophie is a teacher, and she is currently teaching a Grade 5/6 class at Stonnington Primary School. She kindly gave up some of her time this afternoon to skype with us!

Many students had questions for Sophie and we skyped with her for about 25 minutes.

Here is a transcript of the questions and answers.

Let’s get behind Sophie and Dale by voting for them in The Block’s Suzuki competition! Click here to vote for Sophie and Dale as the “best sports” on The Block. If they get the most votes, they’ll win a Suzuki Swift Sport car! You’ll go in the draw to win a new car too! Students – please ask your parents to vote for you.

A very big thank you to Sophie for skyping with us today. It was a highlight of the year so far for the students!

What did you enjoy about skyping with Sophie?

Would you like to go on The Block?

If you were renovating a house, what would you do?

Skyping Mrs Yollis’ Class

Mrs Yollis and her third grade class in California are our blogging buddies. Mrs Morris, Miss Jordan and their students have been good friends with Mrs Yollis’ class since 2009.

4KM and 4KJ skyped with Mrs Yollis on the last day of 2011 when they were just meeting their new teachers. Today the students had the chance to skype with Mrs Yollis again and meet her class!

There is a big time difference between California and Victoria. When we started the call it was

8:55am on Wednesday in Leopold, Australia

1:55pm on Tuesday in Los Angeles, USA

Since 4KM and 4KJ are learning about Australia this term they wanted to share some facts with Mrs Yollis’ class, and also find out some information about America.

Seventeen 4KM and 4KJ students had special jobs. The researchers and speakers were Maha, Lachlan, Leah, Brandon, Trent, Maddy, Millie, Skye, Clancy, Olivia and Becky. Adam and Libby were typists. The photographers were Kealee and Sophie. Patrick and Hannah were the greeters.

This is the transcript of answers that Adam typed up. Libby’s transcript got lost!
