# Grade Four Special Visitor Afternoon

On Thursday afternoon, all of the Grade Four classes held a “special visitor afternoon” to celebrate the netbook program.

Our netbook program is called CLIC. This stands for Collaborative Learning In Classrooms. The aim of our CLIC afternoon was to celebrate the  learning that is happening in Grade Four with the netbooks. Students invited a family member or special visitor to come to the classroom to complete some fun netbook tasks.

In 4KM and 4KJ we use the netbooks every day. We regularly use them in our reading activities and sometimes include them in our writing, maths and inquiry lessons. We also do lots of learning with our books, paper and pens, concrete materials and other learning tools.

The students had a wonderful time sharing a variety of netbook activities with their special visitor.

One of the netbook activities was visiting this problem solving post on our class blog. The challenge was to solve the number problem and write a blog comment with the solution. It was wonderful to see so many mums, dads, siblings, grandparents, uncles and aunties learning from the 4KM and 4KJ students.

# Problem Solving with Our Special Visitors

This is an afternoon for all the students to show a special person some of the things they have been using their netbook for in class.

We have prepared a problem solving activity for our students to solve with their special person.

We have a toolkit of problem solving strategies that we often use in our maths lessons. Perhaps one of these strategies will help solve today’s problem?

## Today’s Problem: Sealed Solution

This problem is from the NRICH website.

A set of ten cards, each showing one of the digits from 0 to 9, is divided up between five envelopes so that there are two cards in each envelope. The sum of the two numbers inside it is written on each envelope:

# 4 Pics 1 Word

4 Pics 1 Word is a popular app available for iDevices. The game involves solving word puzzles. Each puzzle contains four pictures that have something in common. You have to guess what the common word is.

Here is an example:

I’m sure you can guess that the answer to the puzzle above is SIGN. The pictures show the verb (doing word), sign and the noun (name of thing), sign.

4 Pics 1 Word can help us improve our spelling, logical reasoning and vocabulary.

4 Pics 1 Word often uses homonyms. These are words that are spelt the same, sound the same but have different meanings.

For example, the word bat is a homonym. This can be an animal (noun), a thing used for hitting in sport (noun), or a verb (eg. it was his turn to bat next in the cricket match).

The students in 4KM and 4KJ created their own 4 Pics 1 Word puzzles for you.

They used Microsoft Word and learnt skills such as:

• sourcing Creative Commons images and using attributions (or using clip art)
• setting transparent colour
• spacing and aligning objects well
• formatting text, images, text boxes and shapes
