What Do You Like To Read?

The two hour literacy block is a popular part of our day for many 4KJ students.

Part of our literacy block involves students doing some independent reading. This is when students spend time practising reading strategies with a good fit text.

When selecting a good fit text, students need to:

  • Know most of the words in the text
  • Be interested in the storyline, theme or topic of the text
  • Understand what is happening in the text.

While independent reading is a quiet and individual task, afterwards we enjoy discussing the books or texts we are reading.

*****

Many students have favourite authors or a series of books they love to read.

Miss Jordan has always loved reading and had a huge collection of books as a child. When she was young she loved to read books written by Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl. Graham Base picture story books were another favourite.

Miss Jordan has kept a lot of her childhood books and novels, and now they are in the classroom for the 4KJ students to read. It is great to see different generations of children enjoying similar books! Of course there are also many wonderful new authors and books we enjoy too.

Enid Blyton’s classic books are still popular today.

There are many Roald Dahl books in our school libary.

The illustrations in Graham Base’s books are amazing!

A New School Year Begins!

Today is the first day of the 2013 school year at Leopold Primary School in Victoria, Australia.

After nearly six weeks of summer holidays, Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan are excited to welcome the 54 new 4KM and 4KJ students. Some of these students were in 2KM or 2KJ in 2011!

We have a lot to look forward to this year including our new 1:1 netbook program, Bike Ed and of course our camp to Maldon.

Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan are certain all the students will learn a lot in 2013 and enjoy being part of our wonderful classroom community.

We had a very warm summer in Leopold and we look forward to hearing how all the students spent their holidays.

Mrs Morris and her husband, Nate, enjoyed Christmas with Mrs Morris’s family. They also spent some time at Indented Head where Nate’s parents rented a holiday house. Mrs Morris and Nate enjoyed a holiday to the historic town of Beechworth and our nation’s capital, Canberra.

Miss Jordan travelled back to her family’s home in Pomonal (near Halls Gap) for her Christmas celebrations. In January she painted her house and she also enjoyed seeing friends, exercising, going shopping, cooking and reading. Miss Jordan loved meeting her family’s chocolate Labrador puppy, Mocha.

Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan also spent a lot of time in the holidays preparing for Technify Your Teaching in 2013. This was a professional development day held at Leopold Primary School on January 24th. We had 60 teachers attend from all over Victoria to learn about how to use technology in their classrooms.

The Victorian State Schools Spectacular

Yesterday Miss Jordan and Mrs Morris travelled to Hisense Arena in Melbourne to see the Victorian State Schools Spectacular.

Miss Jordan won the tickets at the Victorian Education Excellence Awards back in May, when Mrs Morris won her teaching award.

The Victorian State Schools Spectacular is one of the largest performances in Australia. It has been running since 1995 and this year’s event featured nearly 3000 school students. The three hour show included a variety of performances, including dance, vocal, choir, orchestra, drama and acrobatics.

Here we are before the show

Miss Jordan and Mrs Morris were so impressed with the amazing performances! It was wonderful to see the variety of talent in Victorian primary and secondary schools.

All Victorian government school students are eligible to audtion for the Victorian State Schools Spectacular. Check out the website for more information about the event.

Congratulations to all of the students involved, it was a truly spectacular show!

Have you ever been to a live performance?

Have you performed in front of a large audience?

What kind of performance would you like to do at the State School Spectacular?

Happy 30th Birthday, Miss Jordan!

Meet Your Teachers!

Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan are very interested in getting to know all of their 52 wonderful students. They also want their students to get to know them.

On the first day of school, Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan shared this Prezi to introduce themselves. Prezi is a tool that we look forward to using in 4KM and 4KJ this year.

Now it’s your turn to introduce yourself!
