# “Our World, Our Numbers” Global Project Update

Everyone in 4KM and 4KJ is enjoying the collaborative global blogging project, Our World, Our Numbers. You can read more about this exciting project here.

Recently, when Miss Jordan was doing her grocery shopping at the local supermarket, she investigated the cost of a variety of typical Australian foods. Supermarket prices often change, as each new week brings about a new catalogue with different sales and savings. The presentation below shows the prices she collected last weekend.

In Maths, we have been learning about rounding. Rounding numbers means to change numbers to make them easier and more convenient to work with. We round numbers when we use money all the time.

As you may remember from our currency post, Australia’s smallest value of money is the five cent coin. We often need to round prices up or down to the nearest 5c when we’re out shopping. The table below shows some examples.

# Our World, Our Numbers Global Project

In 4KM and 4KJ, we love to connect and learn with our friends around the world.

Today we are launching a new global project called Our World, Our Numbers.

We have a blog http://ourworldournumbers.edublogs.org where we’ll meet up with our blogging buddies to learn together for the next five weeks.

In late 2011, many of us worked on an award winning global project called Our World, Our Stories. This latest project is based on a similar format with a mathematical focus.

Classes involved

The students are all from primary (elementary) classes and are from three different continents and five countries.

Mr Avery’s sixth grade class from Massachusetts, USA

Mrs Monaghan’s 3/4 class, Room with a View, from England

Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan’s grade four class, 4KM and 4KJ, from Victoria, Australia

Mrs McKenzie’s 2/3 class, B4, from New Zealand

Mrs Yollis’ 2/3 class from California, USA

Mr Salsich’s third grade class from Connecticut, USA

Mrs Watson’s K/1/2/3 class from Canada

How will it work?

Students from all classes will connect and collaborate by sharing their mathematical lives. This will happen through the blog and involve a variety of media.

A different class will “lead” a mathematical topic every four days or so, publishing posts and replying to comments.  The other classes will read the posts, possibly publish their own posts, and leave blog comments.

We will share topics such as currency, seasons, time zones, population data etc.

The learning

Through blog posts, the students will teach each other about different aspects of mathematics based on aspects of their own culture.

The learning will continue in the commenting section where students, teachers and parents will engage in conversations to explore mathematical and cultural topics further.

Students will gain an understanding of mathematics through the eyes of children in different countries and cultures. They will make comparisons and contrasts between their lives and other students’ lives.

## What do you think about our new global project?

We have recently been learning about shape in our maths lessons.

The world around us is made up of space and shape and these are very important concepts for students to understand.

We used Jenny Eather’s Maths Dictionary for Kids a lot to learn and revise vocabulary such as:

• 3D shape
• 2D shape
• regular polygon
• prism
• pyramid
• vertices
• edge
• face

We have enjoyed making 3D shapes with nets, drawing and labelling 3D shapes, counting edges, faces and vertices and playing a range of games to learn about 2D shapes.

# Learning Maths with 4KM and 4KJ

We were recently inspired by the work of our blogging buddies in B4. These students from New Zealand made some maths videos with their teacher, Mrs McKenzie. When 4KM and 4KJ saw the videos they decided they’d like to make their own.

All of the students chose a topic that we had covered this term in our maths classes.

We came up with some tips for making a maths video that teaches the audience something.

Some of our tips were:

• Introduce yourself
• Talk about the learning focus
• Define new words
• Give an example
• End with a tip/farewell message
• Speak clearly and loudly
• Use kid-friendly language
• Do things slowly

Some students found that being a teacher isn’t as easy as it looks, but everyone did a great job and had fun making their videos!

# Grade Four Maths Games Day

Today was an exciting day for all the grade fours. Our maths co-ordinator, Ms Nada Williams, organised a fabulous day of mathematical madness.

Ms Williams had 13 student leaders from grade four to help her organise the Maths Games Day.

The Maths Games Day was held in the LINC (gym) from 9:30am until 3:15pm. There were three main parts to the day – problem solving, strategy games and physical games. Students worked in teams of four and there were some mathematical prizes up for grabs.

We were inspired by the work Mr Avery does with time lapse photography/videos. We decided to film the first four hours of the maths day and speed it up to make a “time lapse” or “fast forward” video. We hope you enjoy seeing our day in just over three minutes!

# Multiplication and Division Fact Families

At the end of last term, the students in 4KM and 4KJ were learning about multiplication and practising their times tables.

We have started this term by exploring the relationship between multiplication and division. These are called inverse operations – that means they undo each other.

We have been making fact families with multiplication and division.

Today all the students made a poster of a fact family to demonstrate their learning.

# Maths in 4KM and 4KJ

We do Maths for one hour every day in 4KM and 4KJ.

The structure of our maths lessons is:

1. A warm up activity – A short, fun game to get our minds ready for Maths.

2. Tuning in – Miss Jordan and Mrs Morris explain the concept we are learning about. Sometimes we link the topic to something else we know about Maths. We often discuss maths vocabulary and list words on the board. We play a game on the interactive whiteboard linked to the maths topic we are currently learning about.

3. Main activity – Students practise the maths skill by playing a game with a partner, using hands-on resources to work on different strategies or completing an open-ended problem solving task.

4. Share time – Students share the strategies they used to complete the main activity. We often discuss how this maths concept can apply to real life and why it is important.

We are currently learning about addition. We all use addition in real life every day and it is important to know a range of different strategies.
