We use addition in every day life all the time, so it is important to improve our skills in this area of maths. In class we have been focussing on:

– Automatic recall of the addition tens and twenties facts

Doubles and near doubles addition facts

Double doubles (for example, 8+8=16 and 16+16=32)

100 facts (addition equations that equal 100)

Adding ones, tens and hundreds when solving three digit problems

– Using vertical addition when solving larger equations

– Using a range of efficient addition strategies during problem solving tasks.

We like to use engaging websites to help us develop our mathematical skills. We usually use maths websites on the interactive whiteboard, and sometimes on our netbooks too.

## When do you use addition in everyday life?

1. Dear 4KM and 4KJ,

I really enjoyed reading this post.

In my class (5AH) we have been doing a bit of addition, as well as subtraction and multiplication. I like using vertical addition, subtraction and multiplication to work out sums.

I didn’t exactly know how to do vertical multiplication, but once my teacher Mr Heenan told my class how to do it, it was quite easy.

Sorry got to go,

Skye (5AH)

• Hi Skye,

My name is Millie and I am a student in 4KJ.

Thank – you for commenting on our blog!

I have my own blog – the address is amelia.global2.vic.edu.au if you want to have a look. I like your blog, great posts! 😛

I have never done vertical multiplication, but it sounds like a good way to work out sums. I find vertical subtraction a bit tricky though.

What other things have you been doing in maths this year? We have been doing problem solving as well as addition.

From,
Millie 4KJ ♥

• Dear Millie,

I also found vertical subtraction a bit hard when I first learnt it in Grade 4. I have improved lots from then.

We have been doing lots of measurement. In measurement two of the things we have been working on are area and perimeter.

What’s a strategy that you like using?

From,
Skye

2. Dear Skye,

Great comment.

From,
Molly

3. Hi Skye,
Thank you for the great comment!

In 4KM and 4KJ we have done a lot of work on addition as you probably know.
We are also learning about vertical addition though probably not the same as you have.

Bye for now,
Ella (4KM)

• Hi Ella,

great comment!

Addition is one of my favorite things in maths. I also like subtraction because it helps with division and multiplication.

Maths is my favorite subject.

4. Dear 4KM and 4KJ,

Great post Miss Jordan.

My favourite subject in addition is doubles and near doubles because they are just like the two times tables.

My favourite online math game is snappy math.

I don’t now what else to say so bye

from Alisha, 🙂 😆

• Hi Alisha,

I think hit the button was pretty hard and pretty easy. But it was fun. And I think it was just right for me to learn those sums.

Was hit the button hard or to easy for you?
Was it fun? Because I would love to know.

See you,
Princess

• Hi Alisha,

I think the task was just right for me.By the way I did enjoy hit the button.

5. Hi 4KM and 4KJ,

What a great post, Miss Jordan!

Well, I don’t really ave a favourite addition websites because I like heaps but my most favourite would probably have to be Mathletics. Even though it’s not a full addition site I still think it’s got some fun addition tests.

My favourite addition strategie is double doubles.

I use addition nearly everywhere I go.

Great post again Miss Jordan.

Bye for now,
♥Ava♥

• Hi Ava,
Wasn’t it a great topic. I think lots of people would l♥ve hearing about our learning in 4KM and 4KJ.

It is hard to think that we use maths in our lives. I never seem to think that I’m using maths, I have not really taken notice!

Have you taken notice of that you use maths in our lives?

Got 2 gallop,

You are right everyone uses mats in everyday life. I know I do because I practice maths at home 7 days a week.
I really enjoy maths. My favorite subject in maths is Addition, Multiplication, Division and Subtraction.
What is your favorite part in maths?

From Yunus

• Hi Yunus,

That was a great post Yunus. I now no you like maths maths is not my fav subject. But i now it is yours. If we do maths I like to do addition that I am good at our I love doubles they are the best I no most of my duobles.

8. Dear 4KM and 4KJ,

I love doing addition because I love maths maths is one of the funnest things to do at school and I really enjoy doing it.

Addition is fun because you get to solve problems and solving problems is fun.

I like addition because you get to see what things equals at the end.
