# Maths in 4KM and 4KJ

We do Maths for one hour every day in 4KM and 4KJ.

The structure of our maths lessons is:

1. A warm up activity – A short, fun game to get our minds ready for Maths.

2. Tuning in – Miss Jordan and Mrs Morris explain the concept we are learning about. Sometimes we link the topic to something else we know about Maths. We often discuss maths vocabulary and list words on the board. We play a game on the interactive whiteboard linked to the maths topic we are currently learning about.

3. Main activity – Students practise the maths skill by playing a game with a partner, using hands-on resources to work on different strategies or completing an open-ended problem solving task.

4. Share time – Students share the strategies they used to complete the main activity. We often discuss how this maths concept can apply to real life and why it is important.

Everyone enjoyed this fun vertical addition bingo game!

We are currently learning about addition. We all use addition in real life every day and it is important to know a range of different strategies.

Here are some addition games we enjoy playing on the interactive whiteboard. You should give them a try!

Ann and Addem’s Dartboard Game

Fruit Shoot Addition

Add Like Mad

My name is Mr. L and I am from a school in Ballarat. I work with a group of 1/2 children and have recently started blogging with them. Thank you for putting together this wonderful blog, you’ve helped me out many times already.

We are learning about addition at the moment too, we’re learning how to apply all of the different strategies that we know to different situations. It’s quite tricky!

Good luck with your maths, I always loved it at school!

3. Hello 4KM and 4KJ!

It’s Shazia again! I really love this post. The thing I like about your blog is that you write posts about school subjects and what the children are doing.

Looking at all the games there I might like all of them but the one that looks more interesting is the Fruit Shoot Addition. It looks like fun!

I use maths in almost everything! Money is most common.

6. Hi 4KJ and 4KM

The maths games you have been playing at school look to be lots of fun. Maths is very important and you use it constantly all through life. Even if it is to work out goals plus points in a football match to get a total score. I loved maths at school but I can’t remember doing the fun games that your classes have been doing.

Bye for now
Kerrie (Sophies Mum)

• Dear Mum,

Thank you for leaving a comment on the blog! The maths games we have been playing at school are lots of fun.

At the football I add up the points and goals as the players get them. I also add up how much we beat Collingwood by!

From your daughter,
Sophie

7. Hi 4KM and 4KJ,

I was inspired by the fabulous games that you put up on your blog. I am very excited to go to school tomorrow (Wednesday) and show my Year Two’s! We love to play Target Number on whiteboards and in our books, but have also been playing Hungry Fish on the iPads, which is similar. I think Ann and Addem’s Dartboard game looks like a good game for doubling numbers, but the Fruit Shoot Addition is my favourite!

I really enjoy maths and I use it a lot, especially when trying to work out time – with clocks and calendars!

Keep having fun in maths!

Miss T

• Dear Miss T,

My name is Liv S and I am in Miss Jordan’s class this year. Miss Jordan and Mrs Morris are fabulous teachers.

Thanks for your quality comment, we loved hearing form you.

It sounds as though you and your class play really fun games. I’d like to try them sometime.

Looks like we have something in common, we both love Fruit Shoot Addtion!

We love our maths hour, we are always doing fun things.

What is your favourite maths suject, Addition, subtraction, multiplication or division?

From your new blogging buddy,
Liv S

• Dear Liv S,

Thanks for your reply! In our class, 6 students really like multiplication and we are starting to learn some times tables this year.

9 people in our class like subtraction the most and 4 people really like addition. The rest of the class love ALL maths!

It’s great to see that you have so much fun in your maths time.

From Miss T and 2B

• Dear Miss T,

Thanks for a fantastic reply. We are having a great conversation.

I agree with the six students in your class, I like multiplication too! Then division. What types of time tables are you learning, 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9?

How many people in your grade like Fruit Shoot Addition? How many like Add like Mad? How many like The Dart Board Game?

From your new blogging buddy,
Liv S 🙂

8. Hi 4km and 4kj,
Matt here (Hannah and Rebekahs dad.)Its great to see the kids enjoying maths games in the classroom. Well done for making Maths fun.I use maths everyday in my work mainly through measurements, but also alot of adding up when it comes to expences.I have a Landscaping business. So measuring areas and adding up how much product we need for the job is most important.
Keep enjoying maths bye for now Matt.

9. Hi 4KM & 4KJ
It looks like our maths classes are quite similar – we always start with a mental maths game to get warmed up, then usually work in pairs or groups to practice on our carpet area, then move on to games or work in our books and finish up with a review of our work. We also have one morning a week where we have computer time to practice our KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) such as times tables, doubling & halving etc – we use a program called Conker Maths to do this. We also use a computer program called Mathletics to practice and for homework – we do this in our own time, either wet playtimes, at home or if we have some free time in the classroom. We have times tables to learn every week – and we get a test! That’s quite a lot of maths!
Mrs M & A Room with a View, UK

• Dear Mrs Monaghan and class,

Hi, I’m Skye from 4KJ!

Thanks for leaving a comment on our class blog! I loved reading it. 😀

That’s interesting that our maths classes are almost the same. Some classes would do the same maths classes as us. It is great to do a warm up game and then go onto your maths activity.

We do mathletics at our school too. It is a great maths website to help improve your maths, don’t you think?

Have you tried any of the maths games that are on this post? If you have did you enjoy them?

From,
Skye ♥

10. Dear 4KM and 4KJ,

Wow, what a lovely post! I especially like it because it is about one of my favourite subjects! I really like Miss Hannan teaching our class. I’m sure Miss Hannan will make a great teacher!

I like learning about different types of maths, but I especially like multiplication. What is your favourite type of maths subject?

I like using vertical addition more than horizontal addition because it is easier to work out. You just add the numbers under each other.

My favourite addition game is Fruit Shoot Addition. My second favourite was Add Like Mad.

The bingo sheet was really fun. It turned out that the people of my table were all playing in the same group!

We use addition every day by:
Shopping, when you are adding up your grocery list.
Cooking, measuring our amounts when we cook.
Tennis, adding up the scores.
Recently, I have used addition in my everyday life by saving my pocket money until I had enough to subscribe to my tennis magazine for one year.

Liv S 🙂

• Hi 4KM and 4KJ,

What an excellent post. It looks like everyone is having fun learning maths in 4KM and 4KJ.

Right now is 1:34pm (Fiji time)(and probably 11:34am Australian time) and I am on Mum’s phone in the restaurant after finishing lunch. I’m missing everybody back at school and home. I will be arriving back in Melbourne at about 10:30pm on the 18th of May. So I’ll be back at school on Monday.

I hope you are having heaps of fun in the cold weather! 🙂 I know I’m having fun in the sun.

See you on Monday,
Millie 🙂

• Hi Millie,

Wow, it was great to hear from you.

We agree, this is a fabulous post. 4KM and 4KJ all love maths. What’s your favourite subject at school?

We all miss you too. We will be so happy to see you back at school Monday. We hope you’re having loads of fun.

From,
Liv S and Charlotte 🙂

• Dear Charlotte and Liv,

Thank you for the reply! It is now 7:35am ( Fiji time) and I have just finished breakfast in the restaurant. My favourite subject at school is maths, as a matter of fact. I really enjoy the tasks our teachers set for us.

I have also read the two parts of the Tale Trail. They are very exciting and well wrote. I am sad I’m missing it.
Like Mrs Yollis said on her post, do you think Max will follow? I can’t make up my mind!

I am enjoying an overseas conversation.

See you on Monday,
Millie 😀
P.S Say hi to everyone and give Skye and everyone else a big hug for me!

13. Hi Sophie,

It sounds like you are having a lot of fun learning about maths.
I was very good at maths in school and enjoyed learning about maths. It’s always something you need to know in life as you grow up.
Especially when you need to work out how much Carlton is beating Geelong by 🙂

From
Malcolm (Sophie’s Uncle)

• Dear Malcolm,

Thank you for commenting on our blog. Both classes are enjoying there new student teachers teahing them maths skills.

The maths focas for a couple of weeks is Vertical Addion. We love the warm up games so far but the activity is fun as well.

It’s good that you were good at maths when you were a kid. Lots of people these days but everyone is better than other things so that is good as well.

You need to do a lot of things with maths when you get older but youg people have to do a lot of things with maths not just at school but at home as well.

Football is won of them but I disagree about the Calton beat Geelong bit. I am a big fan of Geelong but the other teams aren’t that bad. Hope you win the team you vs next

have a great day

15. Dear 4kj and 4km,

It’s great to see that you are enjoying Maths at school. You are lucky that your teachers make learning maths fun and interesting. Maths is so important and necessary for so many things for your whole life. We deal with maths challenges everyday; we are constantly solving maths problems all around us and sometimes we don’t even know it!

Keep enjoying learning, Katy x

• Dear Katy,

Thank you for leaving your wonderful comment on our new post.

I agree our teaches do make our math games really fun! I love maths!

How did you learn maths when you went to schol?

From your new friend
Lilli

• Hi there Lilly,
Thanks for replying to my comment on your maths post. I can remember doing lots of maths questions and answers out of text books which wasn’t much fun at all. Our teachers would write some questions on the blackboard and go through the formulas on how to go about answering them! Aren’t we all very lucky that teaching and learning has come such a long way? Learning through fun is a great thing and will hopefully keep you all interested in learning!
By the way, I am really enjoying corresponding with you and some of the other students in 4kj and 4km!

Keep having fun learning,

Katy:)

Bye for now, keep blogging

• Dear James,
I can’t believe that I spelt ‘favourite’ incorrectly, twice! It’s a little bit funny that it is one of Olivia’s spelling words for the week!!

Dear Lilli,
I am so sorry for spelling your name incorrectly, we know a few girls named Lilli and I was on automatic pilot! It is only a small detail but it’s nice when people get it right – like you did mine.
Your blogging friend,
Katy:)
