Yesterday we went to the House

It was held at Landy Field. We do the athletics every year. It is really fun!

The grade 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s travelled to Landy Field on buses with their teachers. Parents were welcome to come and watch their children. The teachers were running the events for the day. Miss Jordan and Mrs Morris were taking hurdles.

The events were high jump, hurdles, discus, shot put, 100 metre run, 200 metre run, long jump and triple jump. At the end if you wanted to, you could do the 800 metre run.

Landy Field is a big oval with running tracks. It has lots of space to do events. There are lots of seats where you can sit down and watch events.

At Leopold there are four “houses” (which are like teams) and every student belongs to one house. The houses are Paterson, Lawson, Dennis and Gordon. After every event points are tallied up for each house and a winner is announced at the end of the day. The winning house yesterday was Lawson!

If you came first in an event, you got a blue ribbon, if you came second you got a red ribbon, if you came third you got a green ribbon and if you came fourth you received  a white ribbon.

  2. Dear 4KM and 4KJ,

Great job on the post Skye and Becky.
I think that athletics is lots of fun.
Yesterday I got two blue ribbons and one green.
I got the blue for the 100m and the 200m and the green for the hurdles.

My house is Gordon. Gordon is yellow. My favourite event was the 100m. I am more of a sprinter than a long distance runner.

    From your blogging buddie,

    • Dear Sophie
      Congratulations on your ribbons.
If I was in one of your houses I would want to be in Gordon, because that was my surname before I got married!
Who were Gordon, Lawson, Paterson and Dennis? Were they explorers?

In our school we have only two houses – Mawhera and Kawatiri. They are Maori names for the two big rivers that form the northern and southern boundaries of our area.
I am in Mawhera and our colour is red. Kawatiri’s colour is blue.
      Do you have house colours?

      Mrs McKenzie

      • Dear Mrs McKenzie and B4,

Thank you for replying to my comment.

Gorden, Lawson, Paterson and Dennis are only the people’s last name. I can’t remember their real names.
        They were all Australian poets.

Yes we do have house colours. Gordon is yellow, Paterson is red, Lawson is blue and Dennis is green.

  5. Dear Skye and Becky,

Well done on your first Guest Post. It was really good. I didn’t get to see your slideshow because the Internet won’t let me. I saw a bit of it at school though.

I really enjoyed the House Sport Athletics. I won a second place ribbon and two first ribbons. My favourite events were, the running ones, hurdles and shot put. I still liked the others though. I’m in Patterson House and I participated in the 800m race I only did 400m though because I didn’t get into the top ten. :-(

My favourite sport would probably be netball. I think it is really fun.
No I don’t do athletics but this House Athletics Sports Day has inspired me to.

It’s getting late I better go,
    Millie :-)

    • Dear Millie,

Thanks for the comment on this guest post! You are a great blogger.

I hope you liked the PhotoPeach! I enjoyed the athletics too. You did a great job on getting a first ribbon and two seconds.

I didn’t do the 800 metre run! It’s good that you had a go at it and everyone else who did.

Yes, netball is great fun. It is my favourite sport aswell. I hope we get into a team together on the Leopold side.

      Your BFF,

      • @ Skye,

Thanks for the reply. That’s OK. I’d do anything for my BFF. Thanks! That was very nice of you to comment on my blogging skills.

I really did like the PhotoPeach. It really caught my eye. Thanks for congratulating me on my two first ribbons and one second ribbon.

It dosen’t matter that you didn’t do the 800m run. It was very hard and I was already puffed halfway through the first lap! (I only got to do 400m though :-( )

I really, really think netball is awesome. It would be nice to have each other in the same netball team.

        Your pal,

  6. Hi 4KM,

I attended Landy Field Monday to watch my lovely children compete for the first time since they commenced with Leopold Primary School.

Previous years I have missed due to work commitments.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day. The weather was magnificent and I had the opportunity to also see some old faces (the mum’s/dad’s) who I used to see when I dropped Clancy at school when he was in grade Prep.

The whole day seemed to run with ease and the kids appeared to be having fun also which I the main goal of the day!!

I am glad I got to see you all compete with such good sportsmanship and encouraging each other.

Well done to the teachers for a fantastic job on the day :-)

    From Jacqui (Clancy’s mum).

    • G’day Mum,

I was unable to attend myself however your description and photo peach made if easy for me to imagine what it was like! Great effort!
Well done to the students that challenged themselves in the 800 metre race, that one can be a bit tough!
My favourite athletics events would be the shotput, javlin and the long jump. I also enjoy watching the running and hurdles! I will be cheering for Sally Pearson this year in the Olympics as she is Australia’s best hurdler! I don’t participate in athletics now but I did little athletics when I was younger. We had to get up really early on a Saturday morning to go! I remember it being great fun!

  20. Dear Skye and Becky,

I’ve always enjoyed our athletics carnivals while I was teaching in a school. I may no longer have a class of my own but where I am sitting at my computer, I can see a sportsground. While it is normally used for soccer, AFL and cricket, each year the local school holds its athletics carnival, cross country run and Jackson Cup events on the grounds. Without moving from this computer, I can see everyone joining in.

My local school has similar events to your athletics carnival but they have it in two parts. All running races are run in the sportsground. High jump, shot put, and long jump are held at the school. The school doesn’t throw discus although the local Little Athletics enjoys all events. I know I always liked shot put. Being a bigger guy helped me but I never came first.

Like your school, the local school has four houses. They are Kookaburra, Pelican, Bellbird and Swans. When I was a teacher there, I was in charge of the Bellbirds house.

Thanks for sharing your athletics carnival information and congratulations to everyone in Lawson house.

    Teacher, NSW, Australia
